AI agents are getting remarkably good at reasoning. They can read instructions, interpret context, make decisions, and plan multi-step workflows. But there is a deceptively difficult problem hiding underneath all that intelligence:

How does an AI agent actually control a computer?  Not an API. Not a database. Not a carefully designed integration. A real machine. A desktop with windows, menus, keyboards, multiple monitors, login screens, remote sessions, and applications that may have no usable API at all.  This is where AskUI AgentOS becomes interesting.

Rather than treating the operating system as an afterthought, AgentOS provides an infrastructure layer through which agents can see and interact with machines. It brings together screen access, input simulation, window and process management, hardware interfaces, and different deployment models into a single runtime.

The result is a simple but powerful idea:  An AI agent shouldn't need to care how a machine is connected. It should simply be able to control it.  Let's explore how AskUI in our [B/R/AI/N Testwork](https://nucida.com/brain_testwork.php) makes that possible.

![BRAIN news](https://blog.nucida.com/hs-fs/hubfs/BRAIN%20news.jpg?width=960&height=960&name=BRAIN%20news.jpg)Could you stop guessing which tests to run? AI ranks by risk, defects & semantics; even with little history. Focus on what matters & ship faster.

#### From AI That Thinks to AI That Acts

Imagine an agent receiving an instruction: “Open the application, find the customer record, update the address, and confirm the change.” The reasoning part of that task is only half the challenge.

The agent must also:

- See what's currently on screen
- Identify the relevant application
- Move the mouse
- Click the correct controls
- Type information
- Handle windows
- Potentially switch displays
- Recover if the screen changes
- Interact with an operating system that may not expose the right API

This is the gap between intelligence and execution. AskUI AgentOS in [B/R/AI/N Testwork](https://nucida.com/brain_testwork.php) is designed to occupy that gap.  According to the AgentOS architecture, its core capabilities include screen reading through screenshots and pixel/element access, keyboard and mouse input, gestures, window management, and process management.

That makes AgentOS less like another automation library and more like a control plane for AI-driven interaction with machines.  And the architecture becomes particularly interesting when you look at how it separates what an agent can do from how it connects to the machine.

---

#### Three Pieces Make AgentOS Work

The easiest way to understand AgentOS in our [B/R/AI/N Testwork](https://nucida.com/brain_testwork.php) is to think about it as three layers:

1. Capabilities: What can the agent do?
2. Control modes: How does AgentOS connect to the target?
3. Runtime modes: How does AgentOS itself run?

These concepts are deliberately independent. That separation gives developers considerable flexibility: the same fundamental automation capabilities can be exposed whether AgentOS is running directly on a target computer or controlling it from another device. Likewise, the runtime can be configured differently for local development versus enterprise automation.  Let's break that down.

Capabilities: Giving Agents Hands and Eyes

An AI model can reason about a screen, but reasoning alone doesn't move a cursor. AgentOS provides the practical primitives required to turn decisions into actions. Its desktop capabilities include:

- Screenshots
- GPU-accelerated screenshots
- Keyboard input
- Native Unicode typing
- Mouse movement, clicking, dragging, and scrolling
- Multi-display support
- Window management
- Process management
- Automation recovery
- CLI access

This distinction matters.  Instead of building every automation workflow around brittle application-specific integrations, an agent can interact with the computer at the level a human does: screen, pointer, keyboard, windows, and processes.  That opens an important door for AI automation.

An agent doesn't necessarily need a custom API for every application it touches.  If the application can be operated through a computer interface, AgentOS can provide the underlying control mechanisms.

---

## It Doesn't Stop at the Desktop

One of the more intriguing aspects of AgentOS is that its reach extends beyond conventional desktop automation. AgentOS supports Android control through ADB, while iOS Simulator control through IDB is experimental.  That means the same broader automation philosophy can extend into mobile environments. And then there's Companion Mode.  This is where AgentOS starts to feel less like traditional desktop automation software.<https://docs.getxray.app/space/XRAYCLOUD/1690009610/Xray%27s+Migration+to+Atlassian+Forge+-+FAQs>

---

## Host Mode vs. Companion Mode: Two Ways to Touch a Machine

There are situations where installing automation software directly onto the target machine is perfectly reasonable. And then there are situations where it isn't. Think about:

- Locked-down corporate machines
- Kiosks
- Embedded systems
- Devices where software installation isn't possible
- Mobile devices
- Hardware under test

This is why AgentOS offers two control modes.

Host Mode: Live Inside the Machine

In Host Mode, AgentOS runs directly on the target machine and uses operating-system APIs to control it. This provides deep access to the operating system, including capabilities such as:

- Window management
- Process control
- Multiple displays
- OS-level interaction

Host Mode is therefore a natural fit for desktop automation, CI/CD environments, and enterprise virtual machines. It's the straightforward model: [B/R/AI/N](https://nucida.com/brain_testwork.php)'s AgentOS lives where the action happens.

Companion Mode: Control the Machine From the Outside

Companion Mode takes a radically different approach. AgentOS runs on a separate device and interacts with the target through hardware interfaces or device bridges. The target doesn't need AgentOS installed. Input can be delivered through:

- USB HID
- Bluetooth HID

And the screen can be captured through HDMI-to-USB capture hardware or similar media streams. Mobile devices can also be reached through device bridges such as ADB.

The conceptual shift is significant.  Instead of asking:  “Can I install software on this machine?”  you can ask:  “Can I see it and interact with it?” If the answer is yes, Companion Mode may provide a path to automation.  That makes it particularly relevant to environments where traditional software-based automation hits a wall.

---

## Runtime Modes: Development Today, Production Tomorrow

Control mode answers:  “How does AgentOS connect to the target?” Runtime mode answers a different question:  “How should AgentOS itself run?” There are two primary choices.

Standalone Mode

Standalone mode runs AgentOS as a normal process in the current user's session. It's designed for:

- Local development
- Interactive desktop automation
- Manual testing

For a developer experimenting with an agent, this is the natural starting point.  Run AgentOS, connect your agent, test your workflow, watch it interact with the machine.  But production automation often has very different requirements.

OS Service Mode: When Automation Has to Keep Running

Enterprise automation doesn't always happen in a friendly desktop session. You might have:

- CI/CD pipelines
- Headless virtual machines
- Unattended environments
- Remote Desktop sessions
- Applications running outside the user's foreground session

That's where AgentOS's OS Service mode becomes important.  In this configuration, AgentOS runs as a Windows system service with SYSTEM privileges. This enables capabilities such as RDP disconnect recovery, Windows logon screen automation, Secure Attention Sequence support, and background session automation.  This is more than a deployment detail.  It changes what kinds of automation are possible.

Consider a CI pipeline that launches a Windows environment, executes an AI-driven workflow, and needs that workflow to continue even when an RDP connection disappears.  A regular user-session process isn't necessarily enough.  An operating-system service is designed for precisely this kind of environment.

#### The Clever Part: These Modes Are Independent

Here's one of the most important architectural ideas in AgentOS. Control mode and runtime mode are independent.  You can think of the architecture as a matrix:

| | **Standalone** | **OS Service** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Host Mode** | AgentOS runs directly on the target in a user session | AgentOS runs directly on the target as a service |
| **Companion Mode** | AgentOS runs on the companion device interactively | AgentOS can run with service-level deployment where supported |

The point isn't the matrix itself.  The point is separation of concerns.  Control mode determines the relationship between AgentOS and the target.  Runtime mode determines how AgentOS is deployed and operated.  That means your architecture doesn't have to be redesigned simply because your deployment requirements change.

This separation becomes even more powerful when you look at platform support. [B/R/AI/N](https://nucida.com/brain_testwork.php)'s AgentOS is designed to be platform independent across Windows, macOS, and Linux, with additional support for Android and experimental iOS Simulator scenarios through the appropriate control mechanisms.  So the larger vision isn't simply:  “Automate Windows.” It's closer to: “Give AI agents a consistent way to interact with computing environments.” That is a much bigger proposition:

- The machine could be a developer workstation.
- A Windows server.
- A virtual machine in a CI pipeline.
- A kiosk.
- An Android device.
- Or a locked-down system where installing automation software isn't an option.

The underlying connection can change while the agent's fundamental interaction model remains familiar.

#### Why This Matters for the Future of AI Agents

The next generation of AI agents won't just answer questions.  They will increasingly operate software.  They'll open applications, navigate interfaces, manipulate documents, run workflows, inspect results, recover from unexpected states, and coordinate tasks across systems. APIs will remain incredibly important.  But APIs aren't universal.

There will always be legacy applications, proprietary software, desktop-only workflows, graphical interfaces, virtual machines, physical devices, and systems that weren't designed with autonomous agents in mind.  That's where computer interaction becomes a foundational capability.  [B/R/AI/N](https://nucida.com/brain_testwork.php)'s AskUI AgentOS approaches this problem by giving the agent a layer of machine-level capabilities rather than forcing every application to expose an AI-friendly API first.

The most interesting thing about AgentOS isn't any individual feature.  It's the architecture.  Capabilities define what the agent can do.  Control modes define how those capabilities reach the target.  Runtime modes define how the automation infrastructure operates in development and production. Together, they create a flexible foundation for agentic computer interaction.  And that foundation suggests an important evolution in automation.

Traditional automation asks:  “What API does this application provide?” AI-powered automation can ask:  “What can I see, understand, and do on this machine?” That is a fundamentally different question.

---

#### From Automation Scripts to Digital Operators

For years, automation has largely been about deterministic instructions:

Type this.
Wait two seconds.
Click there.

AI agents introduce something different.  They can interpret context and adapt their actions.  But adaptability is only useful if the agent has a reliable mechanism for acting on the environment.  That's why the infrastructure underneath the agent matters so much. [B/R/AI/N](https://nucida.com/brain_testwork.php)'s AskUI AgentOS is an attempt to build that infrastructure: a runtime capable of translating an agent's intent into interaction with real computing environments.  And perhaps that's the most compelling way to think about it:

The AI is the brain. AgentOS is part of the nervous system.  The brain decides what should happen. AgentOS provides the mechanisms through which that decision can become action.

The most exciting phase of AI may not be when models become even better at talking about computers.  It may be when they become genuinely capable of using them. AgentOS sits directly in that transition.  By separating capabilities from connection methods and deployment modes, [B/R/AI/N](https://nucida.com/brain_testwork.php)'s AskUI is building an architecture for a world where AI agents don't just recommend what humans should do; they can operate the machines that get the work done.  And when an AI agent can see a computer, control it, recover from changes, interact with different devices, and run unattended in production environments, the boundary between “AI assistant” and “digital operator” starts to disappear.  That is where agentic automation gets truly interesting.
