There are some technology changes that arrive with a bang.  And then there are the changes that happen quietly in the background: the ones you may barely notice today, but that fundamentally shape what your technology can do tomorrow.

[Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php)’s transition to Atlassian Forge belongs firmly in the second category.  For teams using [Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php) for test management in Jira Cloud, the immediate message is reassuring: your testing experience isn't being reinvented. Your Tests, Test Executions, requirement coverage, reports, and familiar workflows remain intact.

But underneath that familiar experience, something important is changing.  [Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php) is moving from Atlassian’s older Connect architecture toward Forge Remote, giving the platform a more modern foundation for security, scalability, and future innovation.  And that matters far more than the technical terminology might suggest.

#### The Real Story Isn't Migration. It's What Comes Next.

When people hear “platform migration,” the first questions are usually predictable:

- Will something break?
- Will our workflows change?
- Will we need to retrain our teams?
- Do we have to migrate our testing data?

In this case, the answer is refreshingly simple.

The goal is for you not to notice much at all.

[Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php)'s migration is primarily an architectural transformation. The interface and testing workflows teams already depend on are designed to remain unchanged, while the technology underneath becomes better aligned with the direction of Atlassian Cloud.

That distinction is crucial.  Because the best infrastructure upgrades aren't necessarily the ones that give users another button to click.
They're the ones that make everything underneath that button more secure, resilient, scalable, and ready for what comes next.

---

#### Why Forge Matters

To understand why this transition is significant, it helps to look at where Atlassian Cloud is heading.

Historically, Atlassian Marketplace apps were commonly built using Connect. With Connect, much of an application's infrastructure lives outside Atlassian, with the app communicating with Jira or other Atlassian services.

Forge represents Atlassian's newer cloud app development model, with platform-level capabilities around security, permissions, governance, and integration. Atlassian is also winding down the Connect framework, with its end of life planned for the end of 2026.

In other words, Forge isn't simply another technology option.  It is becoming part of the foundation of the Atlassian Cloud ecosystem.  For [Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php), moving now means building toward that future rather than waiting until the future becomes a deadline.

---

But Xray Isn't Simply Becoming “Forge Native” Integration

Here's where things get particularly interesting.  There are different ways to build an application on Forge.  A Forge Native application can run its backend entirely within Atlassian's infrastructure.  [Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php) is taking a different route: Forge Remote.

Think of it as a secure bridge.  The Forge layer handles the integration with Atlassian Cloud, while [Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php) retains its dedicated backend infrastructure for the substantial computing, storage, and service logic required by a sophisticated enterprise test management platform.  That distinction is important because test management isn't a lightweight workload.

Consider an enterprise with tens or even hundreds of thousands of test cases, extensive execution history, automation integrations, requirements traceability, reporting, and multiple teams working simultaneously.  Rebuilding all of that inside a constrained platform environment simply because the platform is newer wouldn't necessarily make the product better.  It could make it worse.  Forge Remote offers another possibility: modernize the integration layer without throwing away the engine that already works.

---

## Security Without Sacrificing Scale

This may be one of the most compelling aspects of the move. With Forge Remote, [Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php)'s connection between its Forge layer and backend is explicitly defined. External endpoints are declared in the app manifest and governed through Forge's egress controls.

For security and procurement teams, that creates a much clearer picture of how the application communicates with external services.  And that matters in an era when “Where does our data go?” is no longer a question reserved for security engineers.

It's a boardroom question. Organizations increasingly need to understand:

- What systems can access their data?
- Where does that data travel?
- What permissions does an application require?
- Can those boundaries be verified?
- Is the technology aligned with the vendor's long-term platform strategy?

The Forge architecture gives [Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php) a stronger foundation for answering those questions while preserving its dedicated backend.  That's a powerful combination.

## The Enterprise Scaling Question

Here's another reason the architecture matters.  Testing doesn't always stay small.  A team might start with a few hundred test cases. Then the product grows. More features arrive. More releases happen. Automation expands. Regulatory requirements appear. Multiple teams start sharing the same quality infrastructure.

Suddenly, the test repository contains thousands,  or hundreds of thousands,  of cases.  At that point, scalability stops being a nice-to-have.  It becomes part of the quality strategy itself.

[Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php) says its dedicated backend provides the computing and storage capacity needed to support large-scale test environments without being subject to the same platform ceilings as a fully native Forge implementation.  That is precisely where Forge Remote makes strategic sense.  Forge provides the modern Atlassian integration layer. [Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php) keeps the backend horsepower needed for serious test management.  It's not about choosing one or the other.  It's about combining the strengths of both.

## The Most Important Benefit May Be the One You Don't See

Visible outcomes often measure technology migrations.

- New screens.
- New features.
- New workflows.

But infrastructure improvements can create a different kind of value.  Imagine your team's testing process stays the same, but the platform underneath becomes more aligned with Atlassian's cloud roadmap, more structured around modern security controls, and better positioned for future development.  That's the promise here.

The migration isn't asking QA teams to learn a new way of testing.  It's giving the product a stronger runway.  And that runway matters because software development itself is changing at extraordinary speed.

AI-assisted development is increasing the volume and velocity of software being produced. Automation is expanding. Release cycles are getting shorter. Organizations are asking QA teams to provide more confidence without becoming a bottleneck.  The testing platform has to evolve alongside that reality.

[Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php)'s broader 2026 product direction already reflects this push toward AI-powered capabilities, automation, and more scalable quality workflows.  A modern infrastructure foundation becomes increasingly important when the product sitting on top of it is expected to keep accelerating.

#### What Does This Mean for Xray Customers?

For the average [Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php) user, the answer is remarkably uncomplicated:

- Keep working.
- Your existing Tests remain.
- Your Test Executions remain.
- Your requirement coverage remains.
- Your reports remain.
- Your workflows remain.
- The day-to-day [Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php) experience is intended to remain familiar.

There is, however, one important administrative detail: [Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php) states that the Forge upgrade is available and requires approval by a Jira administrator on the instance. Once approved, users can continue working without changes to their testing workflows.  So while this isn't a migration that should send QA teams scrambling, Jira administrators should pay attention to the upgrade and the associated communications.

#### A Bigger Signal for the Atlassian Ecosystem

There is also a broader lesson here.  Cloud software is no longer simply about moving an application from a server to someone else's data center.  The modern cloud ecosystem increasingly depends on platform-native security, governance, permissions, integrations, and development frameworks.

That means the architecture behind a Marketplace application matters.  For customers, choosing a SaaS or Marketplace tool increasingly means choosing not just a set of features, but an underlying technology strategy.

- Is the vendor investing in the platform's future?
- Is the architecture designed to scale?
- Can security boundaries be clearly understood?
- Can the product evolve without forcing customers through disruptive migrations every few years?

[Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php)'s move to Forge Remote is, in many ways, an answer to those questions. Perhaps the smartest thing about [Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php)'s Forge strategy is its pragmatism.  There is a temptation whenever a new platform arrives to rebuild everything from scratch.

But “new” isn't automatically better.  A mature product contains years of engineering, customer feedback, operational knowledge, integrations, and edge cases. Throwing that away simply to achieve architectural purity can create enormous risk.

Forge Remote offers [Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php) a middle path.  Modernize what needs modernizing. Preserve what already delivers value. Strengthen the security model. Keep the scalability of the dedicated backend. And create a foundation for what's next. That's not a flashy transformation.  It's arguably a more important one.

#### The Future of Testing Doesn't Wait

Quality engineering is moving quickly.  Development teams are shipping faster. AI is changing how software is created and tested. Automation is becoming more sophisticated. Enterprises are demanding stronger traceability, governance, and confidence in every release.  In that environment, test management can't afford to stand still.

[Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php)'s transition to Forge is therefore more than a technical migration.  It's a signal.  A signal that the infrastructure powering quality engineering needs to evolve just as aggressively as the development practices around it.  And for [Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php) customers, perhaps the best news is that this evolution doesn't require them to change the way they work.  The interface stays familiar. The workflows stay familiar. The testing stays familiar.  What's changing is the foundation underneath.  And sometimes, the most compelling technology upgrade is the one that makes tomorrow possible without disrupting today.  The future of [Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php) is being built quietly:  underneath your tests, not in place of them.

Your testing operations are about to undergo a significant upgrade. The [NUCIDA QA Experts](https://nucida.com/contact.php) support you by guiding you through the different [Xray](https://nucida.com/xray.php) products.  What are you waiting for? Let's test the future! What are your biggest test management challenges at scale? Drop a comment below: we’d love to hear how you’re tackling enterprise QA.
